Area Man Arrested in Western Ohio

A Washington County man is in police custody in western Ohio for allegedly trying to meet up with a 15 year old girl he contacted on-line. The Washington County Sheriff's Office says Steve McFarland has been chatting on-line with an officer posing as a 15 year old girl. Officials say when McFarland traveled to St. Mary's, Ohio to meet the girl, authorities arrested him.

ST. MARYS - Area Telephone Service Company (TSC) cable subscribers may have found a few less viewing options on their televisions in recent months. TSC dropped ABC affiliate WPTA, of Fort Wayne, Ind., and NBC affiliate WDTN, of Dayton, after failing to reach agreements for a price to retransmit the stations.

Valentine to rock theater

ST. MARYS - A former radio personality is headlining a New Year's Eve celebration tonight upstairs at the Ballroom Lounge. Dick Valentine, otherwise known as Gerald Wolfe, will be returning to the St. Marys theater, where the former Moulton WERM f.m. radio announcer had his first solo singing debut.
"It was back when they had the Hospital Follies," Valentine said. "I did the Sinatra tune 'That's Life.'"
The self-proclaimed Sinatra-style vocalist with a jazz background said he will focus his set on Sinatra.

Officials approve annex

ST. MARYS - With the building of a new school, the City of St. Marys must go to the state for approval of including the school territory into the corporation's limits. After a public hearing before the St. Marys City Council meeting held Monday evening, councilors passed the third reading of an ordinance rezoning recently annexed territory into the city.
Because of the annexation, the city passed the first reading of an ordinance requesting the Board of County Commissioners of Auglaize County to petition the director of the Ohio Department of Development to include the newly annexed areas as part of the rural jobs and enterprise zone Monday night.

Fort Recovery takes control in second quarter

Slight area decrease in traffic fatalities

The number of people killed in traffic crashes across the Grand Lake area dropped by just one from 2007 to 2008.
Last year, 14 people - including four Maria Stein-area men who perished in one accident in March - were killed in 11 crashes on roadways in Mercer and Auglaize counties. In 2007, 15 people died in 12 accidents.

Overcoming 32 turnovers and losing key starter Erika Thornsberry to fouls for the last half of the fourth quarter, St. Marys got key baskets and free throws late to beat Coldwater 34-32 in the final game of the 2008 portion of the girls basketball schedule at McBroom Gymnasium.

Dayton man leads police on high-speed chase to Anna

WAPAKONETA - A Dayton man led area law enforcement early Thursday on a chase reaching speeds as high as 100 mph on Interstate-75 from Wapakoneta to Anna. Richard J. Pollack, 51, was eventually taken into custody and jailed for fleeing and eluding, carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest, a Wapakoneta Police officer reported.

Hospital offers course on medical jargon

ST. MARYS - For too many people, the biggest roadblock to a career in medicine isn't the math or money, it's the language.
Joint Township District Memorial Hospital is sponsoring a course to help navigate the language and terminology of medicine. The program begins Jan. 12 and runs through March 2, with a total of eight, two-hour classes aimed at helping anybody interested in working in the health field.
