Celina man charged in connection with local infant's death

CELINA - A Celina man is being held on charges stemming from the death of an 11-month-old infant. Jason C. Thomas, 25, 119 Garman Ave., is being held on $1 million bond on charges of felonious assault, a second-degree felony, and reckless homicide, a third-degree felony, in the death of Kole Atkins, of St. Marys. Thomas appeared in Celina Municipal Court Friday afternoon following an investigation conducted by members of the Celina Police Department. Atkins is the son of Sydney Stienecker and James Matthew Atkins, both of 608 Jay St., St. Marys.

ST. MARYS - As winter sets in, local safety officials say welfare checks become a little more common. "I wouldn't say it's a spike, but every winter we go through this," St. Marys Police Chief Greg Foxhoven said. "We get a lot during the winter so we are pretty much on track with them." Typically, the police department receives requests for welfare checks from family members who live out of town, Foxhoven said. When a request is made, Foxhoven said officers act promptly.

CELINA - A Celina Police Department investigation into the death of an 11-month old baby has led to the arrest of a 25-year old Celina man on charges of Felonious Assault, (F-2) and Reckless Homicide, (F-3). Jason C. Thomas, 119 Garman Ave, Celina is being held on a one million dollar bond after his initial appearance in Celina Municipal Court on Friday afternoon.

Battling snow a tough task

ST. MARYS - As 5 inches of snow fell on Auglaize County Wednesday, crews in St. Marys worked continuously to keep roads clear and safe for residents. "We started salting at 8 a.m. Wednesday and it was just a light dusting at that time," St. Marys General Services Superintendent Dennis Craft said. "Eventually it got worse and we started plowing and didn't stop until 8:30 p.m."

Voters to decide levy

ST. MARYS - After an organizational meeting naming the Board of Education's president and vice president, board members passed a resolution of necessity that would renew an emergency tax levy currently in the district. "There are no new taxes," Treasurer Tom Sommer said of the levy during Wednesday night's meeting. The levy, which has a five-year duration, raises $1.8 million during the duration and was placed on the list in 2004, with collection beginning in 2005.

ST. MARYS - An Alberta clipper bringing snow and high winds hit Auglaize County and the Midwest Wednesday with frigid temperatures expected today and Friday before relief starts Saturday. The storm dumped approximately 5 inches of snow on the area prompting area school officials to call for an hour early dismissal Wednesday and for county and city crews to begin plowing in the morning.

WAPAKONETA - Despite elected officials and department heads trimming 5 percent from each of their budgets and employees not receiving a pay increase for the first time in 23 years, the Auglaize County budget is expected to stay basically the same in 2009. ... Contract services is expected to increase 28 percent, which includes the repayment of nearly $800,000 in back debt the county was ordered to pay in the St. Marys Landfill lawsuit it lost. The debt is expected to be paid in full by July.

Bluesfest eyes new schedule

ST. MARYS - Members of the K.C. Geiger Park Committee Monday night unveiled a revamped schedule for what they hope will become an annual tradition for years to come. Chris Botkin, Rees McKee and Dave Stilwell told city councilors the third annual Riverside Bluesfest is scheduled for Sept. 5 and 6 - a change to the Friday and Saturday format seen in 2009 [sic - 2008]. The switch to a Saturday and Sunday festival was prompted by a home football game Friday night as well as an attempt to cash in on another evening of music.
