Region cleans up from winds

ST. MARYS — While the electric grid in the city of St. Marys escaped with only minor damage, some area residents could be without power until midnight Saturday. A wind storm swept into the region Wednesday night, with winds reaching close to 70 mph.

Molinski discussed three different areas of being involved with the guard and being deployed, including preparation, being deployed and returning home to family and friends.

Low bids allow additional projects at St. Marys school

ST. MARYS - Ahead of schedule and under budget is good news on the new school being constructed. Bids recently came in at a total of $23.2 million, which is $4.4 million under estimate. Because of the low bids, the Ohio School Facilities Commission (OSFC) this week approved additional projects that will relieve the district of more than $1.6 million in expense.

Scott Bertke and Mike Shelby related that the Thomas Shelby Co. began in 1957 as an electronic products distributor. The business grew to include distribution of TV towers and antenna rotors (popular at the time) and today serves as a manufacturer's rep, a distribution warehouse, and a manufacturing facility.

Peaceful end to standoff

WAPAKONETA - A three-hour standoff ended with a Wapakoneta man transported to St. Rita's Medical Center in Lima shortly before midnight today. Gary Herr, 54, suffered a self-inflicted knife wound to the neck when members of the Auglaize County Sheriff's Office Special Response Team entered the residence at 702 Cass St. and found Herr lying on a bed in a bedroom. Wapakoneta Police Chief Dave Webb said Herr had lost a substantial amount of blood when he surrendered peacefully.

ST. MARYS - The St. Marys Board of Education held a work session Monday night to discuss a few construction projects developing in the district. Board members selected alternate bids for the grades six-to-12 building, with the majority of the alternates being co-funded by the Ohio Schools Facilities Commission (OSFC), including a ceiling-mounted volleyball net, lock sets, an upgraded gymnasium floor, upgraded weight room flooring, a standing seam metal roof and a cupola.

MARYS - As frustrating as the first 29 minutes of the game proved while going against a zone defense that exposed a perimeter shooting weakness, the Defiance Bulldogs kept grabbing missed shots and converted just enough at the end of the game to rescue a league victory. Defiance scored seven of the last nine points of the game to pull out a road 48-41 Western Buckeye League win over the St. Marys boys basketball team at McBroom Gymnasium on Monday night.
