MARYS -- The St. Marys Community Foundation Board of Trustees gave checks to student grant and loan recipients at their annual meeting on July 8, 2009, held in the Eagles #767 meeting room. The evening was dedicated to the memory of Larry Shelby, who recently passed away. Shelby was one of the original incorporating trustees of the St. Marys Community Foundation and he served the organization until the time of his death. Seventy grants totaling $65,815 were awarded, with another $101,000 distributed as low-interest loans. Some of the grant recipients listed below are not pictured, because they had previously received their awards at other ceremonies. Founded in 1974, the Foundation began assisting education funding in 1978 with two $1000 student loans. With the money distributed at the July 8 ceremony, the Foundation has awarded $1,318,000 in educational grants and low-interest loans over the history of the program. Foundation trustees Ed Noble, Alma Kuffner, Mary Ann Sheaks, Cal Caywood, Jeff Vossler and Diane Shaner assisted Foundation Administrator Darwin Zeigler in distributing the grant scholarships and deferred-interest loans.
