October 11, 2009 - Press Release
Ohio National Guard Announces Local Food Drive

ST. MARYS -- WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Beginning October 2, 2009 the Recruiting and Retention Battalion and the Family Readiness groups are teaming together kick off our 1st annual "Cans for the Community". Cans for the Community will be a food drive to show support for local communities by collecting canned foods and nonperishable items to donate to local food pantries in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.

We are asking the local newspapers, chambers of commerce, and local businesses to get the word out about this event. The more exposure of this event the better your turnout will be.

Collection and drop off can be done on October 24th and 25th, as well as any last minute drop offs on November 14th , before distribution. The distribution date for all food items to local food pantries will be Saturday, November 14, 2009.

My personal goal for Auglaize and Mercer County is to collect 1,000 cans or nonperishable items before the November 14th distribution date. Let’s see if we all can meet this goal, and possibly exceed it!

So many of our communities have given so much for deployed troops, as well as supporting recruiting efforts, we feel it’s time we give back. In these tough times with the economy we personally may not feel the pinch but other members of the community could use a little boost. This will be a joint effort across the state to try to make a difference. Before and during the holidays everyone likes to help their community out, and what better way than to donate food items to stock shelves of local food pantries for the upcoming holidays.

If you have any questions about this event, please do not hesitate to call SSG Shaun Ruvoldt. My office number is (800) 860-4295. The address to drop off food is 109 East South Street, Saint Marys, OH, 45885. We are located right across the street from the Saint Marys Library and just east of Memorial High School.
