ST. MARYS -- Memorial High School student Mekayla Breland qualified for the Ohio High School Athletic Association Championship Meet in Division II Girls Shot Put, scheduled to take place Saturday June 5, 2010, in the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at Ohio State University.
Breland is a WBL Champion and WBL record holder with a throw of 43'-2.75" in the shot put, a record once held by 1988s Amy Poor from Celina, OH with a throw of 41'-9". In the WBL, Mekayla is also champion in discus, with a throw of 121'-7".
Breland won the District Championship in shot with a throw of 41'-9.5" and ended her season in discus with a throw of 86'-1".
"I was just not focused at all that day and nothing felt right when I threw," Mekayla said. She ended up placing 16th in discus.
Following districts, Breland became the Regional Girls Shot Put Champion with a throw of 43'-2", which seeded her first in the state in Division II schools. She is now a 2-time state qualifier. Congratulations on an amazing, nearly undefeated season, and Good Luck at State!
